Candle Burning Safety

Jars and Votives

For best burning, all jar and votive candles should not be extinguished until liquid covers the top. Do not allow flame to directly touch side of container. Discontinue use when ½ inch of wax remains. Keep wick trimmed to ¼ inch or less at all times to prevent smoking. Container may become hot. Handle carefully. Always use a protective surface as bottom of jar can become hot. Extinguish flame before replacing lid. For maximum burning time, always burn votive candles in a container approximately the size of the candle. Always remove wick tabs from the votive cup before adding a new votive. Never leave candles burning unattended.

Pillar Candles

For best burning results, burn pillar candles until liquid pool of wax reaches ¼ inch from edge of candle. Keep wick in center of candle. To prevent pillar candles from boring a hole down the center, burn candles for at least one hour for each inch in diameter (i.e., burn a 3” diameter candle for at least 3 hours). Keep wick trimmed to ¼ inch or less at all times to prevent smoking. To prevent cracking the candle, prepare candle with hot ice pick or small drill bit before placing on a spike or pick. Always burn candles on a non-flammable receptacle, keeping candles away from drafts and other flammable materials. Never leave candles burning unattended.

General Information

Keep the wax pool free of foreign objects such as wick trimmings and matches. They will interfere with proper burning and are flammable. To protect surfaces from absorbing candle color, always use an appropriate holder. If candle appears ready to drip, extinguish candle and allow to cool for approximately one half hour before relighting. If candle drips, try moving it to another location or check air movement that may be causing a draft. Use old nylons or paper towel to clean and shine candles. Use warm water or freeze votive cup to loosen bond between wax and glass. Absorb wax from carpet, fabric, and upholstery with a paper towel or brown paper bag and a warm iron. Use lighter fluid to remove wax residue.
